The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was a 1.2M sf, 11-storey healthcare facility designed to serve Canada’s fastest-growing community, the City of Vaughan. As the country’s first “smart” hospital, the facility featured fully integrated smart technology systems and devices that communicated directly with one another, thereby optimizing the patient care experience. The hospital included a cutting-edge emergency department, advanced diagnostic imaging, specialized ambulatory clinics, intensive care beds, single acute-care patient rooms for infection prevention and control, and modern surgical services and operating rooms. The hospital was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
Engineering Link provided building envelope services for this $1.3B facility. The exterior wall consisted of aluminum-framed curtain walls, masonry veneer cladding, and aluminum composite panels. The roofing featured an inverted modified bituminous system with leak detection technology for vegetative roof areas and a conventional single-ply system for non-visible roof areas.
The new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital project’s relevance to the City’s project of constructing a new building at 36 Olive Avenue in Toronto lies in the shared sustainability objectives. Both projects aim to achieve LEED certification, indicating their commitment to sustainable building design, construction, and operation.
The experience and lessons learned from the design and construction of the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, as well as the use of innovative technologies and materials, used in the hospital project, could inspire similar solutions in the new high-rise project to improve its durability and reduce maintenance costs. Overall, the relevance of the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital project to this project lies in their shared commitment to sustainability and the potential for cross-learning and knowledge transfer between the two projects.
