Winchester Public School is located within The Cabbagetown Northwest Heritage Conservation District and is noted as a significant building for the district. The school was built in 1898 and a third-floor addition was completed in 1899. Engineering Link was engaged to perform a review of the steel cluster columns and an exterior wall condition assessment. Extensive coordination was required with the city of Toronto Heritage Department for the approvals to proceed with the proposed high-performance windows. Great care was taken in the design of the windows and custom curtain wall caps were produced to replicate the original window profiles and shadow lines. The curtain wall solution provided the required heritage aesthetics while maintaining the thermal performance and durability required by the school board.
Engineering Link was retained to complete the following works at this Toronto District School Board property:
Localized exterior masonry wall repairs, including repair of decorative sandstone band/sills
Replacement of deteriorated stone masonry sills and projecting bands
Refurbishing of the metal roof gutter and repair of the waterproof membrane liner
Repair and repainting of the wood cornice
Reinforcement repairs of steel cluster columns
Refurbishing and refinishing of decorative galvanized steel spandrel panels
Window replacement to match original heritage windows
Structural investigation to allow for the reconstruction restoration work
Determine the load paths and material capacity for the loads and construction methodology
