Structural engineering services to address significant vibration experienced in Balcony Levels 1 and 2 during high-energy concert events. An assessment was completed of human-induced floor vibration, confirming that the balcony structure’s natural frequency of 3-4 Hz was below the National Building Code of Canada’s recommended minimum of 6.0-6.5 Hz for venues hosting rhythmic activities.
While not a load-carrying capacity issue, this condition negatively impacted occupant comfort. Our proposed solution included schematic structural design for vibration mitigation measures, such as the potential installation of tuned mass dampers (TMDs), to enhance structural stiffness and damping, bringing the balcony performance within desired comfort guidelines.
