Engineering Link was retained to complete an assessment of all roofs at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as well as replacement of seven roofs where the membrane was found to be beyond its useful service life.

A field investigation was conducted to confirm specific site conditions to prepare a design brief and develop the roof replacement details. The design brief presented the most suitable roof replacement system along with optional energy efficiency upgrades such as increased insulation thickness and highly reflective roof cover/ballast. Bid documents consisting of the construction contract requirements, general instructions, use of the site, scope of work, drawings and technical specifications was prepared with Engineering Link supporting UHN through the tendering process. As the Prime Consultant, and during the Construction Administrative phase, periodic site reviews were conducted to evaluate conformity with the design intent and general conformance to the contract documents.

All the roofs were specified with a cold applied, odour free, fully adhered inverted roofing membrane system with a minimum 25-year warranty.

The project is broken down into three phases:

  • Phase 1: Design and replacement of the four roof areas that require immediate attention.
  • Phase 2: Condition assessment for all roofs at PMH across both buildings 610 and 620, to identify leaks or issues and assess the projected longevity of each roof.
  • Phase 3: Design and replacement of three roof areas with sensitive air intake locations.
